White oak is a domestic wood that is light to medium brown in color, commonly with an olive cast. It is widely used. Quartersawn sections display prominent ray fleck patterns and were commonly used in arts and crafts style furniture. Because it is rot resistant and swells when exposed to water, it is frequently used in boatbuilding and tight cooperage applications. Tannin in the oak contributes to the flavor of red wine. After a number of uses, the tannin near the inside surface of the barrel is used up by the wine, and the barrel is discarded. These are made out of barrel staves from the Napa valley in California, obtained from a recycler who makes expensive furniture from the used barrels.
There will be a varying amount of red/purple wine stain in the pores of the ripper on the side which was toward the wine in the barrel
Wood is a natural material. The appearance and amount of figure varies from one piece to the next.
