Western red alder is one of the softer hardwoods. It has been popular for years for smoking salmon, but is now becoming recognized as a useful cabinet material. The wood is fairly uniform in grain and color, but spalting adds character, dark lines, and patches of varying color.
This piece has also been stabilized and dyed peacock blue. Peacock blue is a greenish blue, sometimes called ocean blue. Stabilizing is a process of vacuum infusing the pores and grain structure of wood with one of several different resins, which are then heat cured, resulting in a resin (plastic) impregnated wood. When it is also desired to add color, the coloring dye is mixed with the impregnating resin.
Wood is a natural material and spalting is a natural process. The appearance and amount of figure varies from one piece to the next.
