Wood burls grow as warty deformities on a tree trunk or branch that has suffered particular stress. Their exact cause is unknown. Although their natural appearance is not particularly attractive, when cut for use they reveal an incredible variety of texture in the grain that produces stunning results. Some types of trees and some areas produce far more burls than others. The various maples, including box elder, are particularly prolific producers of burls in some parts of their range.
This piece has also been stabilized and dyed blue. Stabilizing is a proccess of vaccuum infusing the pores and grain structure of wood with one of several differant resins, which are then heat cured, resulting in a resin (plastic) impregnated wood. When it is also desired to add color, the coloring dye is mixed with the impregnating resin.
Wood is a natural material. The appearance and amount of figure varies from one piece to the next.
