Spalted hackberry is in the very first stages of decay. Without spalting, hackbery is a very bland, vanilla looking wood, with nothing to show off the interlocking grain. Fungus growth produces blueish gray color that highlights the grain, including pronounced black lines along parts of the grain, marking boundaries of various fungus colonies. If dried at the proper stge, the integrity of the wood is not compromised.
This piece has also been stabilized and dyed black. Stabilizing is a proccess of vaccuum infusing the pores and grain structure of wood with one of several differant resins, which are then heat cured, resulting in a resin (plastic) impregnated wood. When it is also desired to add color, the coloring dye is mixed with the impregnating resin.
Wood is a natural material. The appearance and amount of figure varies from one piece to the next.
